Training Scheme for 18-25 year olds intrerested in documentaries and/or factual programme making

The Grierson Trust DocLab is an all paid for training scheme for young people aged 18-25 who are interested in working in documentaries and/or factual programme making.   Run by The Grierson Trust, it seeks to support and find new voices not currently represented on our screens, and to provide new entrants the financial support to enable them to pursue a career in this sector.  Production companies that are supporting the scheme include:  Century Films (Mumbai High: The Musical); Lightbox (Man on Wire and Searching for Sugar Man), The Garden (24 Hours in A&E) and Minnow Films (SAS: Who Dares Wins).

We are interested in applications from a range of backgrounds - by that we are not solely seeking individuals who have studied film and media.  Last year we had trainees from different parts of the UK, who had studied physics, English, history and geography amongst other subjects.  In other years, we have had non-graduates and unemployed young people on the programme.

Successful applicants will access:

  • A 4 day residential training lab in Birmingham
  • Attending the Sheffield Doc Festival
  • A Shoot/Edit training weekend
  • 2 week paid placement with a production company
  • An industry mentor
  • Receive ongoing bespoke support to help with next steps

All costs (travel, expenses, attending selection day, etc.) will be paid for by The Grierson Trust, wherever the young person is based in the UK. .

We are now taking applications and the closing date is 5pm Tues 29 March.  If the applicant is shortlisted they will be invited to Birmingham for the selection day on Thurs 21 April; and those who are successful are then invited back to Birmingham in May for the residential.
