Are you a budding young film buff looking to gain some experience in the online film review sector? Perhaps you are keen to write your very own synopses on your favourite films or write a biography of your favourite actor or actress.

If the answer to any of the above is yes, and you love watching films and writing quality reviews or synopses about them then this might heighten your interest.

WhichFilm.com are always happy to accept students on an unpaid work experience basis (from home) who are aged 14+ and it provides you with the following advantages.

1) Totally flexible working hours. You complete and submit your work according to your time schedule. This might mean after school, between lectures, during half term or your summer holidays. It’s completely up to you! For the benefit of experience, we can set you some challenging deadlines should you wish to find out if you can take the pressure of deadline writing!

2) You get to choose! You might prefer to write reviews or consider a synopsis for a few of your favourite films. You might even wish to mix it up a bit and do a bit of both. It’s entirely up to you!

3) Make a name for yourself with your unique author name displayed on all your reviews/synopses with the best reviews promoted.

4) After a minimum of 15 reviews/synopses, gain yourself a neat, letter headed reference* from WhichFilm.com to show off to potential future employers.

5) Have your very own Author page detailing your profile for potential head hunters and media publishers looking to recruit the next major talent.

Apprenticeship opportunities at Cambridge University Press - important announcement...

New roles to be advertised in early June! A range of apprenticeship roles in different parts of the Cambridge University Press will be advertised soon. The application deadline will be the end of June and interviews will take place in July 2018. Exact details will be posted here as soon as they are confirmed so do check their website regularly for further information (http://www.cambridge.org/).

Where will the apprenticeships be based?
Apprenticeship opportunities are based in Cambridge within the following departments: Academic Publishing; Education Publishing; English Language Teaching Publishing; Customer Services; Data Management, and the Projects Office.

How does the application process work?
There is an online application, process followed by an open morning and an interview. The open morning will be a chance to find out more about Cambridge University Press before you arrive for your interview the same week. The closing date for online applications will be early July and the open morning and interviews will be held mid-July.

If my application is successful, when do I start?
Most of the roles will start in September. Two of the roles will need to start in August.

Are there any entry requirements?
Usually candidates will be educated to A Level or equivalent.

How long does an apprenticeship take to complete?
Apprenticeships typically take around 18 to 20 months, depending on the apprenticeship.

What qualifications will I receive during my apprenticeship?
The new Government apprenticeship standards are nationally recognised. Some of our apprenticeships will work towards the Business Administrator Level 3 standard and some will work towards the new Publishing Assistant apprenticeship Level 3 standard.

Individuals can expect to have ongoing discussions with their line manager, about future career goals and their potential within the organisation.

What will happen at the end of my apprenticeship?
Our apprentices are guaranteed a job, on completion of the apprenticeship. 

What will I be paid?
The starting salary for an entry level apprenticeship is c.£14,300. This rises mid-way through the apprenticeship based on performance, and again on completion of the apprenticeship, to c.£18,900.

Science students on the Career Ready Programme had a wonderful opportunity to visit NAPP Pharmaceuticals of the Mundipharma Group on Tuesday. The photo is outside one of their iconic buildings, known to NAPP staff as, “The Toaster”! A tour of the premises revealed amazing insights into the stages involved in the production of slow-release medicine tablets and capsules, and students got to see a broad range of job roles with staff working all around them.  Quality Control demonstrations really highlighted the accuracy involved in producing goods needing high levels of precision, and students gained their first experience of clean-room environments, requiring careful attention to ensuring the workplace is kept as clean as possible – even down to wearing protective suits covering all shoes, clothes, hair and even ears and beards! 

Meeting a university student on industrial placement with NAPP allowed our students to speak to someone of a similar age and outlook, whilst a talk after the tour that looked at how to best prepare for a CV/interview

/Selection Day proved a real hit.  Feedback was very positive with one student commenting, “The master class was helpful because it helped me understand that I should put more about myself and personal achievements, than just educational qualifications, [in my CV.]”

Applied Students on trip to Medimmune

 Students from Applied Science joined their teachers today in a trip to Medimmune at Granta Park, Great Abington, as part of their Career Ready Programme.  This programme aims to introduce aspiring students to key businesses in the community, opening up new experiences and broadening horizons towards potential progression routes.  Activities on the day included an opportunity to speak with Apprentices and university students on one-year industrial placements. The aim was to help our students to get a feel for what it is like to work in such a business, from people of a similar age and background. This was followed by a guided tour around the main site, with exposure to company layout and structure.  For many students, it was the first time they had seen inside a major business.  Laboratories nestled closely to busy office spaces, breakout rooms allowed staff to engage in more focussed meetings, and students soaked it all up excitedly. 

The day was rounded off with a fantastic virtual activity:  A bespoke exhibition at Medimmune houses a layout of elements of a new Research and Development building being built by parent company AstraZeneca, next to our college.  Students were able to   able to take a virtual tour to look at the intended interior, via VR glasses.  They were then asked to complete a timed exercise, working their way through a series of small puzzles within mock rooms, set up intentionally to imitate how things will look in the new building: laboratories, offices, “huddles” (small, sound-proofed meeting spaces) and a restaurant, all showed what it should be like when the new R&D centre is finished.  Everyone enjoyed the activity, and many comments were made about how it really demonstrated how the company is interested in ensuring that the future sustainable working environment will not only be world-class in its business endeavours, but will also try to ensure that staff are looked after and enjoy working in such a positive space.
