Careers resources for British Science Week

British Science Week starts today and runs till 15th March and we wanted to pull together our science-related careers resources for you to share with your students. We’ve grouped some of our key advice articles under the headings below. The theme this year is Our diverse planet so we’ve also included a section listing careers for students who want to study and preserve our natural world.

How to become...

Studying science at school/college and university can unlock the door to numerous careers you never even dreamt of. Across all of the sciences, you’ll build up skills from problem-solving and research to communicationpresentation and teamwork.
Maybe you knew that studying physics could lead to a career in astronomy – but did you know it could pave the way to jobs in robotics, the games industry and even visual effects?
As for chemistry students, as well as becoming environmental scientists and medics, they can also pursue careers in food manufacturing, coming up with amazing new flavours for chocolate bars and snacks, as well as space exploration.
Biologists on the other hand cure diseases, study newly discovered lifeforms, chart the impacts of climate change and help athletes take themselves to new limits.

Our diverse planet

The theme of British Science Week 2020 is Our diverse planet and at a time when people are sitting up and taking the climate emergency seriously, it couldn’t be more appropriate.
Renewable energy is really taking off as we begin to power our societies without burning dirty fossil fuels. This means jobs in renewables are on the rise – check out our guide to careers in this sector.
You could also begin a career learning about and protecting species endangered by human activity. Have a look at our article on careers in marine biology to find out how you can use your career to help ocean life thrive.
