Employee earnings in the UK: 2019

Commenting on today’s figures, ONS senior statistician Roger Smith said:

“Earnings continued to increase in the latest year. In recent years this has been fastest among the lowest-paid occupations. However, taking inflation into account, real pay is still some way below its pre-crisis level.

“The gender pay gap has been falling slowly in recent years for full-time employees, but in 2019 it was little changed. However, for employees under 40, the gap is now close to zero; it’s among older workers that the pay gap remains substantial.”

The ONS has today published the 2019 findings of the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings. As with last year’s result, there are now three separate bulletins, one looking at the overall results, one looking at the gender pay gap and the third looking at the distribution of high and low earnings.

Main points

  • Median weekly earnings for full-time employees reached £585 in April 2019, an increase of 2.9% since April 2018.
  • In real terms (after adjusting for inflation), median full-time employee earnings increased by 0.9% in the year to April 2019.

New Creative Careers Programme website

A new website to help young people discover the range of jobs available across creative industries is now live. DiscoverCreative.Careers is designed to help students and their parents and teachers find out more about careers in industries including advertising, architecture, fashion, film and television, museums and galleries, performing arts and publishing - and the routes to them.

The Creative Careers Programme aims to show that such careers are financially sustainable and have a comparatively low risk of automation. There are currently more than 77,000 vacant positions.

Automation Investment Attracts Employees

Nearly half of employees in the UK would be attracted to work for an organisation that was investing in automation, or has plans to do so, however organisations are failing to promote their investment in automation to potential job candidates, according to Hays.

The research found that 48% of employees would be attracted to work for an organisation that was investing in automation or has plans to do so. At the same time, while 70% of firms are investing in automation, 24% do not currently promote their technological investment in any way when hiring.

UK Productivity Falls

Labour productivity in the UK, as measured by output per hour, fell by 0.5% in the second quarter of 2019 ended June 2019 when compared with the same quarter of the previous year, according to new data released by the Office of National Statistics (ONS). This follows two previous quarters of zero growth.

The data from ONS reports labour productivity estimates for the second quarter of 2019 for the whole economy and a range of industries, together with estimates of unit labour costs. Both services and manufacturing saw a fall in labour productivity growth of -0.8% and -1.9% respectively, compared with the same quarter in the previous year.
