Summer 2020 Opportunities for current Y2 students thinking about one year work placements

There are currently several exciting placements available within Cambridge Consultants, who have been named a Sunday Times top 100 company to work for. They help the world’s leading companies deliver breakthrough products, acting as a research and development function to solve the problems that no one else can.

YINI is delighted to be working with Cambridge Consultants again this year.

These are of particular importance to Year 2 students, particularly those considering engineering, applied science or a closely related discipline when leaving Long Road' in the summer of 2020.

Placement overview:

  • The successful student will have the opportunity to work on real life projects for real clients, building their skills and knowledge whilst making a real contribution to the work of the company. During their gap year they will also work in a small team with other technology scholars to deliver a multidisciplinary project, which they’ll then present to the rest of the company at the end of their gap year.
  • They will have lots of support during their time at the company, including an experienced mentor. In addition, the experience you will gain at the company could count towards membership of professional institutions – for example, the IET and IMechE.

Who’s it for? Year 13 students who if successful, would be available to start their paid YINI placement in September 2020 (the role is for up to 12 months, before the student goes to university)

Location: Cambridge

How to Apply:
Students interested in applying for the role, must complete the following:
  1. Apply to YINI via our website (no charge): https://www.etrust.org.uk/yini-register
  2. Confirm their interest in the role by emailing Lidia Harrington on l.harrington@etrust.org.uk

If any of our students are successful, they will be supported by the YINI scheme throughout their placement, this includes receiving support and additional training opportunities through the company.

ALL Year 2, Level 3 students - what comes next if you have decided not to go to University?

As the deadline for university applications draws closer, many of you will be thinking about alternatives to this destination.  What if you don't want to go to university?  What if you don't know what other options are out there?  How do you find out more?  When do you need to decide, etc?

At 2.00 on Thursday of this week, there will be a short talk (30-45 minutes) in the LRC to try and address these queries...and more.  All Year 2, level 3 students are invited and teachers know that you may wish to attend the talk, rather than lessons(if there is a clash).

Andy Goodwin, Head of Progression and Careers Leader will deliver the talk, and will address all of the following topics:
  • What options are available after leaving college, and the advantages/disadvantages of each?
  • Find out more about Apprenticeships and consider them as an alternative route to Uni
  • Advantages and disadvantages to a Gap Year
  • Where should you look for opportunities?
  • How can you best prepare for the future?
  • What resources/sources of help are available to help you succeed?
We hope to see you there.

This month we hear from our Events Manager, Rebekah Clarke...
What has been your favourite MKF opportunity?
My favourite schools opportunity has been the Johnson & Johnson Healthcare Insight Days, where I was able to go along to most of the sessions and see the great work that J&J volunteers do. My favourite part was watching the students present back on their healthcare challenge ideas!

What advice would you give to students about their future careers?
My advice for students is to take every opportunity, you never know where it will lead you. Say yes to the project or task which you’re not quite sure you can do, or you might feel under prepared for – often you will surprise yourself and you’ll be very grateful for all the doors it opens for you in the future!
