University of Sheffield - non-standard routes into studying Engineering

Many students who wish to study engineering or computer science at university enter directly onto year one of a degree programme. Entry requirements at the University of Sheffield for this route range from AAA to AAB (or equivalent) with a high attainment level of Maths and a science subject for most courses. Specific entry requirements can be checked on UCAS or our website by using the course finder tool:

There are now additional routes for students who wish to study engineering at the University of Sheffield and don’t currently meet our standard criteria.

Pathway to Engineering
For 2017, we introduced the new Pathway to Engineering programme for some of our degrees. This is for students who are expected to attain grade A or above in maths (or equivalent), but who are not studying a science subject. It takes the form of a three week course running directly before the first semester of year one of the degree. We hope it might be particularly useful for female students, as we know they are less likely to take Physics at school. There are no exams to pass as part of the Pathway.

The Pathway to Engineering course is only available for students wanting to study Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering and our interdisciplinary degree - MEng Engineering. You can find out more about the Pathway to Engineering by watching this short video:

Foundation Year
All our engineering and computer science courses can be accessed via a foundation year route. For all courses this is a route for students who haven’t taken STEM subjects at school, but for some courses it is also a route for those that show potential in STEM, but haven’t quite attained the grades required. I’ve included all the entry requirements below, as they do vary for different degrees.

Students looking to study Mechatronics, Robotics Engineering, Systems and Control Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering or Civil Engineering:
  1. Relevant A-level subjects (maths and another science) achieving BBC
  2. Non-STEM A-level subjects -  achieving ABB
  3. BTEC - DDD in Engineering including Distinction in Further Maths units - Note a maths assessment also forms a part of the entry criteria

Students looking to study Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering, MEng (Interdisciplinary) Engineering, Computer Science or Software Engineering:
  1. Non-STEM A-level subjects -  achieving ABB
  2. BTEC - DDD in Engineering including Distinction in Further Maths units - Note a maths assessment also forms a part of the entry criteria
