National Careers Service Support

For many of you, your exams will mark the end of your time at Long Road Sixth Form College. But have you sorted out what you are going to do next?  If you start thinking about plans now, and back-up plans too (in case your results don't come through in the way you want) you will be one step ahead come the summer. 

Once you leave the college, the Careers Department will no longer be available for in-depth support, so come and see us now, or speak to your teachers about alternative sources of help.

The Institute of Export (IOE) is the only professional membership body in the UK offering recognised, formal qualifications in International Trade.

The IOE are dedicated to helping individuals by using education to expand their international business horizons. With this goal in mind the IOE has developed a full range of professional qualifications from apprenticeship to a two-year Foundation Degree, in the Professional Practice of International Trade.

Students can sign up for the Foundation Degree throughout the year with start dates in May, September and January.

Medicine, Dentistry and the need to take UKCAT test

Any students wishing to apply to study Medicine or Dentistry for entry in 2013 (or deferred entry in 2014) must take the UK Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT) this summer.


The 26 University Medical and Dental schools that require candidates to take this test as part of the admissions process are as follows:

University of Aberdeen, Brighton and Sussex Medical School, Cardiff University, University of Dundee, University of Durham, University of East Anglia, University of Edinburgh, University of Exeter, University of Glasgow, Hull York Medical School, Imperial College London (Graduate Entry), Keele University, King's College London, University of Leeds, University of Leicester, University of Manchester, University of Newcastle, University of Nottingham, Plymouth University, Queen Mary, University of London, Queen's University Belfast, University of Sheffield, University of Southampton, University of St Andrews, St George's, University of London, Warwick University Graduate Entry.

UKCAT test Locations

The test is offered at a choice of over 150 UK high street test centres and over 300 testing centres worldwide. The closing date for registering to take this test is 21 September 2012. However, due to high demand, students should register to take this test immediately to ensure they get a test slot at their chosen test centre.

The Year in Industry (YINI) is a scheme run by EDT, a charitable trust who encourage young people into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Careers.

YINI provide paid placements for students post A levels for 9-12 months and guarantees they are set on a fast track to their future career. At this crucial stage of their education they have many decisions to make about going to University or pursuing other options, taking some time out to gain valuable work experience will help with these important decisions.

We have placements for students interested in all areas of Engineering, Science, Technology and Business.

Students earn a competitive salary and around 25% gain sponsorship from their company.

Following on from Wood Green, The Animals Charity’s successful youth work in Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Hertfordshire, we are delighted to announce our animal care scholarship days running for the third year on the following dates in 2012:


13th and 14th August

15th And 16th August

20th and 21st August

22nd and 23rd August

Places are limited to 2 per day, 8 in total.

The programme will allow young people with a specific interest in animal care or a desire to pursue a career in animal welfare, the opportunity to spend the day on a unique and supported work placement. They will be directly working and learning with animals in a setting recognized worldwide for its animal welfare standards. Not only will the programme provide increased confidence working with both animals and people but also a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate animal and voluntary work experience on CV’s and training applications.

The day itself is provided free to the successful applicants n order to open up this experience to all who would benefit.
