Masterclasses at the University of Cambridge

Subject Masterclasses are subject-specific events that offer students a flavour of undergraduate study and an introduction to the University of Cambridge.
Aimed at academically able Year 12 students from any school/college, the Masterclasses provide students with an opportunity to explore topics of interest beyond what is covered within the A Level syllabus and offer the chance to experience typical undergraduate teaching at Cambridge.
A range of subjects is offered each year, which in the past has included Chemistry, Engineering, Genetics, Geography, History, Languages, Mathematics, Music and Psychology.
Each Masterclass includes:
  • two taster lectures delivered by leading academic staff from the University
  • the opportunity to discuss and ask questions
  • an introduction to the Cambridge admissions process
  • the opportunity to hear about life as a Cambridge student from current undergraduates
    When are they?
Subject Masterclasses take place on selected days throughout the year. The majority of Masterclasses start at 10.30am and finish at 3.30pm

Rail Week 2017 - opportunities for students

Year 13s and careers advisors: here's your chance to speak directly to rail employers

Working on the railway is just about tracks and trains, right? And I can only get a job if I’m good with maths? Wrong!

Next week is Rail Week 2017. It aims to bust loads of myths about what working in rail is really like. These myths could be standing between you and your dream job!

So here we’ll answer your questions about careers in rail – plus join our Rail Week forum today to question top employers directly!

1. Is it all about tracks?

Working in rail is all about engineering, right? And I would spend all day out on the tracks? Nope! In fact, there are loads of different career routes in the sector that many people aren’t aware of. Everything from customer service and marketing to interior design and even archaeology are possible.

2. Is it only for people with a particular skillset?

Most people think you have to be excellent at science and maths to get a job in rail. But in fact there are jobs for young people with a wide range of skill sets – from great communication skills to adaptability. There are even roles for creative types.

3. Do I need a degree to get started?

If you're in year 13 (or you're advising year 13s) you'll be thinking about the various options and routes into work. It might come as a surprise to learn that you don’t need actually a degree to get a job in rail. There are a wide range of apprenticeships where you can train (sorry we couldn’t resist) on the job, earning a salary at the same time. You can even become a highly skilled engineer this way!

Year 13s and careers advisors! Do you have more questions? Now you can ask employers yourself...

Our Rail Week forum is your chance to learn about careers in rail by talking to rail employers directly. You can get tailored advice by asking about different career paths, skills, apprenticeships and loads more! This is particularly useful if you're in year 13 and you're thinking about your next steps.
Rail Week 2017 is taking place from 9-13 October. But you can ask your questions right now - and here's how to do it in 3 easy steps:

1. Create a free account

2. Go to Rail Week Forum

3. Ask a question

  1. Click the big pink Ask a question button (see pic on the right).
  2. Fill out the simple form.
  3. Hit submit, and hey presto, your question will appear in the forum!
  4. You'll get an email alert when someone replies - employers will start responding during Rail Week, 9-13 October.

What can I ask?

Anything you like (provided it's rail related and careers related...)! Here are some ideas:
  • Can I begin a high-skilled job in rail without going to uni? If so, how?
  • What rail careers are open to arts and humanities students?
  • I'm thinking about studying engineering at uni. What specific areas will help me into a career in rail? Do I need to go to university?
  • I feel like rail is mainly for guys. Persuade me I'm wrong.

If you think this email might be helpful to someone else, please forward it on. If you have any questions or need any help, please get in touch with us at team@successatschool.org.
