Just because someone's ethnicity isn't 'white caucasian', it doesn't mean that they want to be an expert on race

The assumption that BAME academics will study race, or bring an element of racial politics, into their work is as pernicious as expecting women to focus on gender.

Both are lazy – but also prevalent. This week on the network we heard from Jennifer Chisholm, a black PhD student, who took us through her conflicting feelings about studying race. On the one hand, she felt empowered to know that white academics will automatically see her as an authority, on the other, she worried about pigeon-holing herself. The answer, she argued, is for universities to foster nurturing and supportive environments in which academics from all backgrounds can feel comfortable exploring their skills and interests.

ARU Visitor in the LRC

We welcome today, Emma Hickman of Anglia Ruskin University.  She will be in the LRC near to Reception, between 10.00 and 2.30.


Steph is happy to speak to any students with an interest in going to university and can answer questions on a broad range of topics, from finance to housing, Personal Statements to how to choose a course.

We are delighted to welcome Lester Pearson of Student Finance England to college today.  He is more than happy to answer any financial queries about University and he can be located by the main LRC Reception desk between 10.30 and 3.00.

The University of Bedfordshire are in the LRC today

We are pleased to announce that the University of Bedfordshire are visiting college today.  They will be happy to answer any questions about Higher Education from students and staff.  If you would like to talk to them about Bedford, or any other university, please go and see them in the LRC between 10.00 and 2.00.  Their representative's name is Steph Strange.

ARU Visit Long Road

Please be aware that Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) will be in the Student Centre today from 10.00 to 2.00.  Any students, or staff, who would like to ask them questions about HE (not just about ARU), should feel free to approach them.

University of Hertfordshire Roadshow Bus, Wednesday 26/6, from 9.00

I am pleased to say that after some last minute negotiations, we have managed to arrange for the University of Hertfordshire Roadshow to come to our college this Wednesday, from 9.00 to the end of the day.  The Bus is touring Birmingham, Nottingham, Leicester and Milton Keynes areas and has kindly agreed to spend a day with our college students.  The aim of the bus will obviously be to promote courses at the University and some subject staff will be present with activities, but information will be available on all subject areas and it is for ALL students.  There will also be staff on the bus whose role will be to give advice and guidance on a variety of issues including:

·         why go to university

·         finance
·         personal statements

The bus and staff will effectively be acting as a drop-in information point for students between D and G Blocks.  Please make them welcome and seize the opportunity to find out more.  It could lead to a life-changing decision!

Visitors in college today

Please remember that we have two lots of visitors in college today.

Firstly, we have Sport Lived, a Gapyear organisation who integrate sporting activities into their projects. They will be based near to Reception and will happily speak to anyone who wants to find out more.
Secondly, we have the Anglia University Roadshow Bus in college, fielding questions regarding university, and running 3 workshops; the first two are on Business Enterprise and are more or less fully booked. The third session that still has space (students/staff can just show up) is on HE Finance. The bus is situated between D and G blocks and they will welcome anyone who has questions to ask.

Anglia Ruskin University Open Days for Years 12 and 13

Please note that the Careers Department has just received information regarding Anglia Ruskin University HE Information Days and Taster Days. This is one of the most popular University choices for Long Road Sixth Form students so we thought we’d highlight it for you. These special days are available for years 12 and 13 and give insight into University life and courses.

HE Information Days are ideal for Year 12 students who are thinking about their future. A mixture of talks and activities are provided which will both inform you about HE opportunities, whilst inspiring you to think constructively about how to achieve your goals. Typically, these run from 10am – 3pm and lunch is provided.

Subject Specific Taster Days are a great way for level 3 students to find out more about how a specific subject is taught at University level. The External Liaison Team is happy to discuss your requirements in detail and can develop Subject Specific Tater activities which support your syllabus.
