Spotlight Blog Harry Fletcher Co-op Construction Apprentice Hi, my name is Harry I currently work as an apprentice at the Co-op. I chose to do an apprenticeship as I wanted to start my career while learning and getting paid. After leaving sixth form I didn’t want to carry on with education in a classroom environment and felt like university wasn’t for me. I started looking into the different levels of apprenticeships and felt I was suited to the Higher Apprenticeship. I wanted to gain real-life experience in the construction industry and also get a qualification. Initially, I was worried about getting an apprenticeship as most of my friends in sixth form chose to go to university, but I am so pleased I’ve taken this route! I studied engineering at school and when leaving I researched the construction industry and thought it was interesting. I worked in retail during sixth form part-time and knew there was more to it when I was stacking shelves. When I saw the apprenticeship, I was really interested and started doing research into retail construction and I was eager to learn more. Having the opportunity to learn about the construction aspect of Co-op’s properties with knowledge about the retail world has been truly great. I would like to emphasise that working at Co-op is always exciting! I have been given loads of support from everyone on the property team. No matter how high up people are in the company, everyone has offered to give me additional support to help me do my best in the role. There are so many opportunities within the business and I am learning something new every day. I have met so many new people internally and externally and this has really improved my confidence. All my colleagues have helped me with my assessments, and I feel like I have lots of support. Learning about Co-ops history I feel proud to work for such a great company and can’t wait to see where my apprenticeship takes me. Kier Construction Open Doors Event at St John’s Halls, Northampton

A weekend of Open Door events inviting members of the public to visit working construction sites.

The collaborative initiative is the first of its kind for the sector and intends to raise the profile of the industry, challenge stereotypes and encourage greater engagement with the public and local communities to attract talent into the industry.

The event will provide a unique opportunity to witness first-hand the scale and complexity of major construction developments and also demonstrate an industry-wide commitment to welcoming a wider, more diverse range of talent into the sector.

Representatives from The University of Northampton and Moulton College will be available at this event, to discuss any course options.

Vacancy for Engineering Construction Apprenticeships

VACANCY: Engineering Construction Apprenticeships Age: 16+
Job Description:
This International company who have designed and manufactured steam-generating technology
since 1895 are looking to recruit well-motivated individuals onto their Engineering Construction
Apprenticeship programme. Gaining an NVQ level 2 in Engineering Construction in the 1st year, candidates then specialise in a particular discipline of the industry, including Welding, Steel Erecting, Mechanical Fitting, Pipefitting and Project Control. August 2009 start.

You will need:
Applicants should be prepared to live away from home, have a mature outlook and be well
motivated. GCSE passes at Grade C or above (or equivalent) in English, Maths and IT would be
preferred. (Closing date: 30.04.2009).


Training Offered:
Training is delivered at the company Training Centre in the West Midlands. Block release to
complete a Technical Certificate in Engineering Construction at Leeds & Hull College. Time will also be spent on sites.

10,000 Apprenticeship Places to be created, including many in the Construction Industry

At least 10,000 apprenticeships will be created in spite of the contraction in the economy, as the bill which launches the National Apprenticeship Service was announced last week by John Denham and Ed Balls. New Government commitments are expected to see upwards of 7,000 new apprenticeships in construction, while high street giants released plans for large-scale increases in the numbers of apprenticeships they offer.

Sainsbury's, Tesco, Superdrug and Phones4u have committed to expand massively their numbers of apprenticeships, to ensure they have the right skills to stay ahead of the competition. Sainsbury's has recently quadrupled the number of apprenticeships across its stores to 465, Tesco will have a further 800, Superdrug plan a further 1,000 while Phones 4u intends to train at least 1,000 apprenticeships by next April.

Skills Secretary John Denham said: "This shows that we are well on the way to making apprenticeships a mainstream option for young people who want to get on. We anticipate that one infive of all young people will be undertaking an apprenticeship by the end of the next decade. "in 1996-97, just 65,000 people started an apprenticeship. that figure nearly trebled to 184,000 in 2006-07. But we need to go a lot further , which is why we are investing £1 billion by 2010/11.

"It's great that private sector employers are making such a commitment to, and an investment in, their workforce. We need to do the same in the public sector and must ensure that every pound invested by taxpayers not only helps deliver new infrastructure projects but will help provide the skilled workers needed in the future, and enable more people to build a strong career. Apprenticeships are an excellent way to do this."
