A big thank you to Anna Harvey and Lisa Wignall of Price Bailey Legal Services who came to Long Road Sixth Form College this week and delivered an excellent session on How legislation can impact upon Recruitment and Selection.  Students, Ed Coppen, Chris Mathew, Poppy Ingram and Hannah Clarke were just a few of the Level 3 Business Studies students in the audience, and all stated how they had found the content useful for their coursework (to say nothing of helping them to develop stronger "Networking" Employability Skills!)

How valuable is Enrichment Activity?

Record one in four graduates in UK awarded top degrees
The proportion of students getting high grades in their degrees rises from 17% to 24% in five years, reaching record levels according to the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), and this can make it difficult for employers to choose between applicants.  Martin Birchall from High Fliers Research, said some employers no longer required a particular degree classification as “in recent years diversity has become a real issue for many employers and they’re keen to have as broad a spread of applicants for their graduate programmes as possible,” he said. “That means they don’t necessarily want to cut out graduates who did not get a first or a 2:1 but have CVs that are jam-packed with other skills and experiences that may be more relevant in the workplace." Clearly, this points in the direction of students improving their profiles through undertaking a broad range of Enrichment activities.  Never before have these activities had such high value in helping students to differentiate themselves from competing applicants.... Read the article

Well done! Comments by our visitors...

Well done to all those students who attended last week's Apprenticeship Event in the Student Centre.  You should know that the overwhelming response from Exhibitors was that they were very impressed with students at our college.  The were particularly complementary about the insightful questions they were asked, and they thought that students presented themselves in a mature and respectful way.  One exhibitor went to great length to compliment the communication skills of our students, saying that this is exactly what employers are looking for when deciding between applicants, and it is just as well - some stands had as many as 40 students signing up for more information about the opportunities they had on offer! 

It is action like this that will help you to prepare for your future when you leave this college, lining up opportunities for a smooth transition into the career you want.
